You should go to GQ any time an enemy ship is spotted; long before silent running becomes necessary.

yeah thats what I meant. I didn't assume people were doing it while attacking. My question is why if your already at GQ do the destroyers pick you up so much easier? I was being pinged and just for the hell of it i secured from battlestations and the pinging immediatly stopped but when i went back to gq it started right away again. From my understanding silent running at gq is the same as silent running while not at gq with the exception of the watertight doors being closed and all the crew at the ready.

they hear you cuz you damage control party is activated at the same time. you'll have to manually deactiate them until they're really needed, but by then it'll be too late

That should be the case; silent running is silent running, and all hands should be at their battle stations during battle. If it isn't then something's wrong.
