A miracle, wing, and a prayer. Too old, too fatiuged. Look at some of the pictures in the link i posted above, particuarlly the exterior hatch's. I wonder how much is erroded under the waterline. Being covered in silt may have preserved her under the waterline.. or maybe not, i really dont know.

Speaking from experience as I work on the USS Torsk, if the USS Ling every submerged again, she would not come up. Over the years the Torsk has been put in dry dock and 1 inch steel plates welded to the hull were it has gotten thin. She is due for another dry dock for a small hole in the starboard side ballast tank. Not to mention the air intake for the diesels inside the sail would leak like sieve. The Torsk too would not surface if she was submerged today. As far as a couple of tugs to transport the Ling....not a problem. Many a sub/boat have been sold for scrap in Philadelphia and towed. One sub was towed from PA to TX for scrap. The issue here is money. Does she generate enough cash to sustain herself? Is there a museum curator that oversees the Ling? If so, these are the people you need to talk with. At this point, it would best served to start locating a better spot for Ling and hopefully a spot were the city council is passionate about preserving the Ling. It is up to these folks to raise the cash to move her and set up as a museum. There is a lot of red tape to cut through. For example, the Torsk is a WW2 submarine. Her original sail was the two AA guns with radar mast as you see in this game. She was made a guppy with the snorkel installed and the sail was streamlined as you see it today. We had a sail from WW2 but the City of Baltimore said the sail did not fit with in with the shapes of the building around her. Great....the fate of a submarine based on if it fits in with the building structures!!!! No account for what she is and what she did. That, my friend, is today world.

Anyway, find out who is involve with the Ling. Get yourself involved. Get the newpaper involved. You will definitely feel better about it in the long run. I certainly do when I work on the Torsk.

Property owner is one Malcom Borg a media magnate in New Jersey. According to the article he has been leasing the space for the sub at a rate of $1.00 us a year for a long time.

Now he wants it off his property. I dident read into that anywhere they just wanted to scrap the ship. In fact I read where efforts to relocate her were being made but had money and logistic issues.

Like I stated in earlier post....it all ends up with the all mighty dollar and how much you have. If you get a chance to see how the USS Batfish got were she is today and the ficticious loans/bonds/political maneuvering etc that were set up to move her, it will make your head spin. I strongly recommend finding a local museum curator and have them get involved. Sure, no talk of scraping but when they see what money can be made from scraping the boat things tend to get a new light on them.

It seems a real shame that a piece of history would become scrap metal.

But then again its not the Enola Gay (shrug). But I would think that something could be worked out.

I had a bit of a brainstorm the other night while watching TV

Has anyone contacted the discovery channel regarding this boat ?

It would make a great documentary interspersing recovery efforts with dramatization of action the sub saw while in service.

They have a big budget and I think this would be right up there alley !

ps; I want to take all credit (an profits) from the idea ! :p

A post from a Ling museum person on UBI.

We still need signatures. Besides the Ling, the NJ Naval Museum has a Memorial to the submarines and submariners lost while serving our country, 2 rare miniature submarines (Japanese & German) and other artifacts.
