To make things easy, I take only as many crew as will fit in the crew quarters and duty stations when submerged. Therefore my crew is always rested when not involved in combat operations.

As long as there are enough bunks for all off duty crew, they get adequate rest and you don't need to fuss too much over them. They will get tired when at action stations especially after a convoy attack, followed by depth charging and then reloading torpedoes,
