Curiously, from a pedantic point of view, will "Djakarta" maintain the Dutch name throughout the war? I mean, we all know the Japanese changed it to garner support amongst the locals, but the Allies still referred to it as Batavia until after the war when the name was adopted by the Indonesians.

Just like Singapore: the Allies never referred to it by the Japanese-occupied name of "Syonan-to".

(I'm Australian but I have an interest in the Dutch East Indies affairs of pre/early WWII)
It's on my to do. The names are probably stored on a campaign layer somewhere, but I haven't found those yet (haven't looked very hard, to be hounest). I guess it should stay Batavia until Indonesia is recognized as it's own sovereign nation and that's well outside of the game's timeframe.

Oh yes, I'll just copy some subs over and use them as in-game placeholders for the time being. I haven't gotten around to those yet because I fear their system is a little more complicated then the regular ships. I'm still toying around with things but I should have most of the ships down.

The only problem with completely original subs eventually will probably be the interiors, the sailors, voices etc etc. It's going to be a huge time sink.

One huge advantage of (original) dutch subs:
They were very similar to U-Boats!
They even used G7A torpedoes (yes, the dutch actually used german torpedoes to sink japanese ships:rotfl
Ok, the G7A had a long and useful life anyway, was used in the postwar german navy and a lot of NATO navies until around 1970 at least.
I suppose the fire control procedures and internal arrangements would be similar.

I did something stupid and had to reinstall SH4. (Remember kids! When modding, always keep a back-up file in case of screw-ups!) Somehow the Campaign_LOC.mis got overwritten and every single location entry was deleted. Makes the campaign map a little bland.

Also, the excellent pack3d tool by Sansal doesn't seem to like planes and subs very much so those are gonna be in a bit later.

Anyway, the Battle of the Java Sea will be included as a Singleplayer mission. It's not totally accurate because there's no Fubuki or Kagero class destroyers yet or any of the heavy cruisers. The Shiratsuyu and Asashio's are there however, as is the Sendai CL.

I've used Tribal's for the Royal Navy destroyers and a Kents for the HMS Exeter and HMAS Perth. The Northhampton class and the Clemson class detroyers are already in the game so at least the Americans are accurately depicted . The battle should be pretty even even though ABDAFLOAT got sunk IRL, but that's because there's no ship-launched torpedo's yet.

You play with a porpoise for now, I'll swap it out with a K class sub once I get em in.

Look for version 0.2 tonight.

Great mod thanks!

I wish more Australians knew about the sacrifices made by the Dutch in the Pacific theatre. If it wasn't for you and the Yanks we'd be a nice part of the Empire of Japan.

Try versions 2 and 3 of Pack3d
The latest version doesnt open aircraft or the subs

You can get all versions of pack3d here if you dont have them all

I was messing around with a night surface action, and the game is really poor for doing surface engagements since the DDs don't use their primary weapons---their torpedos.

This is a major failing, IMO.

As for the CA guns, I have a feeling all the guns are limited to the overly short visibility distance of the game.

As it is, I think it's better for players to stay the heck away from any battles since they will be pretty disappoiting, IMO.

They also flew Brewster Buffaloes. Not sure if that's in the OOB for SH4 as I haven't checked yet. But the first campaign I did in Il-2: 1946 (admittedly picked at random) was flying for the KNIL from Sumatra in a Buffalo. Did a quick look and found this article too:

The Dutch had nothing of interest in the roster. Couple of fishingboats and a trawler.

I have seen no indication of anything of interest for this mod being included by UBI at a later date save for the Catalina (the skin texture is in there somewhere). Thanks for the heads up on the Buffaloes, those indeed flew around the Indies.

I'm going to Holland after my semester here is done and I'm going to visit the Navy museum and the KNIL veterans home to see if I can dig up some neat stuff. I should be able to get some technical drawings of the ships at least.

Be sure to contact me at the Navy Museum (www.marinemuseum.nl) when you are planning your visit. I'm sure I can provide you with lots of information regarding Dutch ships and subs.

Great job on trying to get the Dutch sailors the attention they deserve.

Mind you, apart from the K- and O-boats, the Dutch used one British T-class sub during WWII. HNlMS Zwaardvisch (ex-HMS Talent) sunk U-168 off the north coast of Java on 6 October 1944. I suppose it will be easier to find a T-class sub on SHIII than a K- or O-boat.

Best regards, Leon Homburg.

BTW, from the readme:

Quote:
-Added Java class light cruisers (1 on 1 Cleveland class clone)
-Added Hr. Ms. de Ruyter (she's not truly a Java class though she is derived from it, just put her in here for now)
-Added Hr. Ms. Java
-Added Hr. Ms. Sumatra
-Added Admiralen class destroyer escorts (1 on 1 Fletcher class clone)
-Added Hr. Ms. Evertsen
-Added Hr. Ms. Witte de With
-Added Hr. Ms. Kortenaer
-Added Hr. Ms. Van Ghent
-Added Hr. Ms. Piet Hein
-Added Hr. Ms. Van Nes
YOu needn't have cloned the 2 ships!

You can do it "Bungo Pete" technique. The roster files stay, but they point to the actual Cleveland and Fletcher. You add a Sea folder for each ship as you have done, but only put the cfg, eqp, sil, sns, and shp files in there. This improves performance by not loading any new models. The only reason to clone the dat is if you changed the dat. I can make a "bungo pete cloned" version for you if that would help.

I think Dido might be a better match, BTW. I will whip up a quick version for you with the eqp changed to look more like Java.

Also, the Dutch DDs looks remarkably like early IJN DDs. But you are right, using the ship power pack makes more sense.

Here is a Dido based version of a Java CL---no dat changes, this points at the default Dido like "Bungo Pete."
