You want to keep an eye on your speed. Dont know off the top of my head what the range of a IIA is but I know its way more than 1200 nm. Make sure you're running at ahead 1/3 and not flank speed or something

Travel at 1/3? That's crazy. I thought that's why it was called Ahead Standard? Because it was the standard speed of travel.

Anyway, I don't recall the exact distance but the game gives you a range when you examine the different subs. I think it was actually 1700nm or something to get to the sector. Regardless, it would have left me out of fuel to get to any port anywhere.

Well i've never sailed in a type II being a type VII sailor myself The ranges given though are prob for a surfaced speed of, say 8 or 9 knots. If you drop your speed a couple of knots below that the range will increase a bit. In the navigator panel you can ask the range at current speed, go up or down a knot and see whats the optimal. I found out a few days ago (cheers Mort!) that when I was running at 10 knots in my VII the average range was about 15000 nm with a full tank., when I dropped down to 8 knots it increased to about 21000!

Default Yup

Type II are gas-slurped uboots, you will be forced to sail 1/3 ahead(3 or 4 knots) surface...

If you do, you can with the II type all the way to AM53 and back to base.
I tried that, and i maded...

But personly i like the VII class better, for me it's not about the "more fuel", for me it's "more torpedoes" & "Deck-gun"...
So i always start with career in Wilhelms haven...

Even my first mission was from Wihelmshaven to Grid CF and back without refueling
Thats what i called "saving fuel" and when i was in Wilhelmshaven i have 25% fuel left..

Gotcha. Guess I'll have to look into ahead 1/3 and liberal use of time compression.

Yeah, the II class is a relic. 3 torpedoes bays is crazy, but it makes it feel like I'm really starting at the beginning. I definitely want to upgrade though.

In a type II, you really need to be a fuel miser. Even short dashes at 10 kts chasing a rarget can deplete you enough to make the retun problematic. I always managed to get back with around 10% fuel left (even to Kiel)

Can you switch to a type IID? They are good little boats with saddle tanks and have around 3x(?) the range of a IIA.

If you really want to try the Type II, which I like by the way. Start your career via SH3 Commander and preselect your port and patrol area. Last night I was testing a new mod and started a career in 09/1940 with a type IID.

Great fun, its wearing Fubars IID skin, camo style, looks great. I have SH Weather going and we are now in a raging gale and you should see that little boat pitch up and down all over the ocean....talk about sea sick.

The Type II is fun for short patrols and coastal work. Type VII is a great weapon! But you can enjoy both!

Good luck Kaleun!

Wilcke out!
