I have fiddled with all the settings for best picture and performance. Much to do about the post processing, I truly believe this game was made for the post processing. My reasoning is without the filter the picture looks fuzzy and bright, not clean and crisp like SH3. My logic here is when the post processing is applied the fuzzy graphics interact with the post processing giving the appearance you see. Not only that, I have the sliders mid-way, water glare on, caustic on and 3d waves on. The game actually runs smoother with the post processing on. I ran the game for about an hour in the post process and I like the post processing. I think it adds some thing to the game and to me the overall graphics picture is better.

Just my take on it fellas. Give it a try. It grows on you like fungus after a while. Back to my sub

I agree with you.... I think it was meant that way and since I have been running it on, it has reallly grown on me and I like it Seems more life like to me.....

Yes, it does seems more life like and quite frankly I get better FPS with it on. I hope the others who are staying away from it will try it because it really grows on you and presents quite a different feel overall as compared to other games we have all played. I find it very interesting and believe the game is better overall with it.

Yeah it does grow on you....I found it overly dark to begin with increasing the "Gamma" in game does not really work because you then get lighter nights...It's just a matter of fiddling with your CRT/TFT settings....BUT the drawback in this method is it then hands over to the next game you are playing....So you have to fiddle again....The gamma thing is a little twitchy on the slider would have been nice to use the enter key to increase/decrease by one increment...That way it only effects SH4 and not your default TFT/CRT settings.

What exactly does the PPF change or modify? When looking at the game with and without the PPF, I thought it looked similiar. Maybe I'm not picking up on the subtle changes.

Looks like I'm the only one then with a FPS decrease , about 5 to 7 FPS lesser on a 6600 gt :hmm:
Got the latest drivers and run the DX version that comes with the box.

Nope, I get a performance hit by post processing too.

I agree that PPF looks better, but I get a FPS hit with it turned on. One thing I've noticed is that if you have to turn off PPF, turn off sun glare as well - it looks better than with just PPF turned off.

I've got everything else maxed out....

P4 3.0Ghz
1GB RAM
Nvidia 6600 GT

@Stabiz/wetwave,

Perhaps the nivida card, you both have the same:hmm: manufacturer. I don't know. The game is smoother for me with PPF on. I shoved in a Radeon X1300 512mb yesterday and it works just swell. I start to slow when in outside view, shallow water with all the rocks and stuff looking at the sub from the outside. The blurry water is cool. Not much of hit on FPS to want to turn it off though.

The is a newer version for DX is out. Give it a shot. Also, I had a 6200OC card that made the game just unplayble with anything moved up. I dumped that card for the Radeon X1300 512mb. Works just great. Perhaps your 6600 creates some bottleneck for you?

Ok, I download the FRAP program for some screenshots. It shows you the FPS as well. Outside view I get 15 FPS in this particular picture. It is still smooth play. From what I understand, the human eye can only register 15 FPS. With that in mind your target FPS should be over 15FPS. Anyway, this pic was taken. I'm satisfied with the performance concerning PPF. Outside view I get around 25 FPS above the water. It remains the same with active warships/merchants. Inside the sub and map rooms etc I get around 40 FPS. Enough tinkering. I go sink some vessels now!

I'm gonna get me the latest DX version and a new vidcard is in the planning for next month.
But most new vid cards have dual DVI output and no VGA and I'm still on a CRT 19 inch monitor.
Not checked it yet but probably there is a adapter or something to let me keep using my good old CRT

Edit: great screenie BTW

A adaptor should come with the card. The last two I purchased had them I do not know where you live but CompUsa is closing 125 stores. The sale price are excellent!
