I missed the cane and the strap (they were banned in Australian Schools earlier, I think) I only once got into trouble (broke a glass dish in Home Economics) giving me one detention.

I won a couple of awards and manage to dux a subject while at high school, but left in year 11 as I had enough of School.

Became a aprentice Toolmaker, but once I finshed the 4 years required I did some further study and became a Librarian!!!

My 6th grade teacher had this board that he used for spanking those who got out of line. Actually you had the choice of standing in a corner during recess or getting spanked. I think I always chose getting spanked because I didn't want to miss recess.

Anyway, this board had 3 holes in it and he called it ............ You guessed it.

THE HOLY BOARD.

Of course he made mention to the fact that with the 3 holes came less resistance when he swang it thru the air.

I remember in the sixth grade I was eating lunch in my classroom. I looked away for a sec and the portly girl who was beside me took my lunch and started to eat it. I called her a "pig" and punched her in the gut. I had to write a letter to my mom explaining my actions and apologizing for them.

The educational habits in your countries bewilder me. such things stopped over here - before the world war. I am far from propagating anti-authoritarian education (it doesn't work for sure), but certain specialities in anglosaxon tradition are even less acceptable to me. Even dogs I wouldn't treat like that.

I would never treat dogs as bad as I treat humans because if a dog misbehaves, it is usually the owners fault.

That's why I wouldn't cane the kids, but their parents.

Today school is expected to neutralize the mistakes of parents, or the dysfunctional family environment of theirs. And that is a bit beyond the reach of what school can do. It's also not the school's responsebility to take care of principle education of the kids, but their parent's. That includes that parents are not out of house 18 hours a day, but spend time with their kids and take care of what theirs kids invest interest in and what/whom they pick as their idols, also that parents don't spend half of the family income for alcohol, and take care of what an example they set themselves in order to teach "positive values" to their kids.

Neither the state nor the school can compensate for a good job done by the parents. And I strongly believe that it really should be like that.

Society, at least in the USA, is now at a point where both parents work (normally) so they can live the life that they desire. As a result, young children are too often raised in the hands of day care employees. Noone is going to convince me that "day care" is going to give the type of attention, discipline and love that a parent would normally be providing if they were raised at home. So it is no surprise to me why there is such a lack of knowledge and maturity with so many people in todays society.

Sorry for going off topic. (sort of)

I have stabbed some one in the head with a parker pen didnt do much to the other guy but still got my point accross, and also partly destroying and short curciting the main electrics board.

Middle and High schools I was a good little boy, me

Primary and Nursery?

Not so good....

Nearly expelled from Nursery and nearly suspended from Primary

In fact...I think the only time I got into a fight after Primary school was with a German kid called Klaus, I forget what the disagreement was about...but I found a housebrick and considered smacking him with it...decided not to (thought the consequences outweighed the benefits) and dropped the brick...then HE picked it up...and I could see that he had no such qualms and legged it...the brick hit me on the back of the foot...so...I carried on running a bit...then let him catch up with me, then put him down.

Any other times I've come close to a fight I've been able to talk myself out of it....

I made history in our Primary School, I was the only one who had the cane .. I don't know if the record stood until it was knocked down and replaced by houses [progress ?]. I was told my School didn't exist about 6 or 7 years ago so ...
In Senior School, on our last School trip in 4th year, I and 2 others got caught shoplifting and brought back to School and given the cane. It turned into a double-edged sword as our Headmaster informed us that the person we stole from was a Widow and my Mother was a Widow also and struggling so that hit home to me.
At the start of 5th year and our first Assembly, the Headmaster plonked us on the stage to parade us in front of the rest of the School and informed the 5th year section that they will have no School trips in this final year due to our actions. My face went Crimson [blushed bad back then] and there was a moan from the 5th yearers. Needless to say, the 3 of us were 'sent to Coventry' until we left School.
Fortunately, the Head didn't inform my Mother otherwise I would have got a good hiding from her and I never told her. If there is an afterlife [and I doubt it] then she will know now.
All in all, I had the cane 9 times [3 x 3; 2 lots on my left hand, being right handed and 1 lot on my backside for the shoplifting from a shop run by the Widow]
I haven't forgot any of them even now years on and STEED is right with the UK/Discipline thing; there is no deterrent.
One other thing, when my Dad was alive and he said, 'sit down or else' .. you sat down because you didn't want to find out what the 'or else' would be. Kids today would say 'or else what ?' then tell their Parents to F**K O** [I've heard them do this in Supermarkets = Cringe !!]
