Noo!

I just read it! So sad! One of the last connections to our passion is gone!

RIP Herr Buchheim.
Mögen sie ihren Frieden finden.

Sad news, but his work has made him immortal.

Yes there was a book by u-boat sailors that was written against him becose someone felt that he presented a wrong picture of the u-boat service.

But hell, i loved the very ditailed describtions of all the ditails of u-boat operations and life on board. No other book is so exhoustive in the explanations.

Default Buchheim's "U-Boat War"

Just picking up this thread, since I picked up Buchheim's book "U-Boat War" today at the library. I highly recommend it.

It's basically a photo diary, plus text, of a patrol on a VII-C boat. I've only scanned thrugh it so far. The photos are incredible. And if anyone was doubting the accuracy of the Das Boot movie meeting in heavy weather of the two U-boats (Thomsen's), there's an amazing series of photos of Buchheim's boat meeting another U-boat ... looks identical.

Details are: Lothar-Gunther Buchheim, "U-Boat War", Trans. Gudie Lawaetz, Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1978. ISBN 0-394-41437-3.

I wrote Buchheim about two years ago and his health was in a slow decline at that time.

This reminds me when I was looking at online biographies of u-boat captains. Every now and then, I'd come across one w/out a death date, which implied the guy was still alive. I thought there was at least one top ten u-boat ace still alive, for example.
