I found him (her? Ship ought to be female, but with a name like Rodney...) sitting in the middle of a convoy, with one of those miserable storms going on. Visibility was down to nuttin'. I saw him in the fog, got myself situated by manuvering on the surface, then fired off a few fish at him. They hit. Searchlights popped on. A second or two passes by, and they center right on me. A few seconds later, the first salvo splashed nearby. Must've straddled me pretty well, 'cause I didn't have enough time to dive before the second salvo slammed into my boat. Famous last words: "There's no way they can see us in this weather..." Most of the other times, it's been my sheer stupidity coupled with greed. Instead of slipping away quietly, I've got this need to get that one last fish out of the tubes. |

Mine was probably destroyed by mines on my first patrol of a career... in St. Nazaire.

Attacking a convoy...the wolf infilitrated the chicken coop and I was between two rows of merchant vessels. Let loose my eels on the 1st merchant passing in front of my bow, rotate scope and wait till last possible second before firing #5.
Meanwhile, I must've somehow ordered ahead 1/3 because next thing i know my sub has plowed into the 1st vessel I had torp'd and he takes me down with him in a handshake of death... Woke up the wife, dog, and three goldfish with that one. ![]()

My daftest death.
I'd loosed a couple of eels at a large Merchant and she was refusing to sink, so I surfaced and started using my deck gun on it. A few shots later and my WO shouts "ship spotted". I'm thinking "I know there's a ship numpty, I can see it!" So I carry on shelling the ship. The next thing the WO shouts is that the ship is under attack. It's 1940 I can see that the Merchant is unarmed. Just as I'm thinking about throwing the WO overboard, shells start exploding all around. I look in the direction that they are coming from and see a destroyer hurtling towards me, shooting all cannons. 30 seconds later and I'm dead. ![]() Now when my crew are using their deck gun, I'm scanning the horizon looking for trouble. |

With all this talk of convoy's, it reminds me of another unfortunate fate. I was in the thick of a convoy in my IXB; sunk a few merch, wounded a few others. It was at night and my scope eventually got spotted from a merchant. In come the DD's. I contemplated the idea of driving myself deep when I remembered not too long back I hit a T2 in the screw, leaving her dead in the water. I figured I'd do the old hide under the merch trick. After taking a few DC's at 30m I finally reach my safe haven, and sure enough, the DD's lost me. Now call it luck or karma, but not 5 minutes after arriving to my clever hideout, I guess the T2 decided she had enough. Not only did she sink on top of me, but the explosion she made doing it sent me to the bottom (oh man was it loud). An eye for an eye I suppose.
