In case you're not using GWX yet: get it!

d/l'd it as I was installing the game

And don't forget this!!! Subsims take A LOT of Practice!!! But it's well worth the effort. I've been playing subsims since Gato came out for the Commodore 64 (sweet machine!) and I still get my butt kicked sometimes.

Actually this is why I'm enjoying it. Most games are too easy...

Yep, it's a fantastic game and I love the visuals of the sea with sunrises and sunsets.

Can't stop checking out the visuals (helps to have 1600x1200)!! It's a shame I'm playing 100% realism, liked watching my sub surface, fly-by and dive in the academy with the free cam. Great to be on the bridge and just watching the world pass by.

But you'd better hunt other prey!

Where's the sport in that

You might want to consider changing yer nick

Died on my first patrol, kind of fitting.

No silent running in that scenerio you posted? Yes? Probably the issue on that one which means Bernard was in the forward torpedo room breaking wind. Anyway, the game is very immersive specifically if you add some of the great mods developed.

As far as your first patrol being a complete washout(no pun intended) read my sig and find out you are not alone! We are taking applications for the club

Enjoy and welcome aboard.

Immortal & DrMilton, welcome!

Don't forget: you have the advantage only when those DDs are unaware of your presence. The moment they know you're around, you're the prey. Only stealth will save you.

When the DDs are on top of you, dropping DCs, use flank speed until you reach 6 knots. Immediately order 2 kts & drift turning slightly. By the time the DCs explode, you'll be about 80-90 meters away from the position they are dropping on. Now they have to find you new position almost from scratch.

Hi Immortal44

OK, so you have GWX. In that case, I'm pretty sure they spotted your conning tower. If you are at PD, all stopped, your boat will slowly rise. This is a feature of GWX that has caused some controversy.
You've got to keep moving (ahead slow), but you can do more: Don't PD, set your depth manually, 13 - 15 meter. Also, do not raise the scope more than you need to, and keep it up as shortly as possible.
Then there is the aspect issue: Keep you bow or stern pointed towards the DD whenever possible, and above all: Don't mess with destroyers.

When I have a DD in my vicinity and I "want it" or have to deal with it, I set my torpedoes, go silent running, if possible, stop engines, and have given bow shots successfully.

But if I'm dealing with a convoy, I avoid the Escorts as much as possible. I always have a stern torpedo set for taking them out.

Just love it when they get surprised with a bow shot (just like in the movies Run Silent and Run Deep when they went to the Bungo Strait)
