During to my duty in the German navy I passed the canal several times.
There is german naval tradition at the flood-gates in Kiel. In the time where the ship is raised or lowered, the youngest crew members must try to buy soft-ice for the remainder of their group from the flood-gate office. And the buyers must be quick because the office has not enough ice for all.
