Convoy icon on the map as a circle, not square

When the subs are no longer part of the convoy it reverts back to a merchant as lead and so you get a square icon

The lead unit in the convoy is an AI sub....but that doesn't mean the sub is in front of the convoy, I gues? Could be anywhere around it?
