If it is neutral/friendly, it won't cap your TC, if its enemy, it will cap out at 32x (stock)

The pinging. I expected from films/books that the sound of destroyers pinging (searching) and the sound of the ping hitting the hull would be distinct. So my question again is "when do you know you have been pinged" and hence to change direction/depth of boat?

If the DD is passive you will not hear any 'pinging,...however when it goes 'active' you will most definitely hear the 'ping'....be advised that your submarine stealth meter is not 100% accurate as to whether you have been found...it is more just an advisory indicator of the possibility/probability

when your u-boat is being pinged by a DD it does have a very distict sound someone once explained it as a scraping sound or something like that. so is this modeled in sh3 coz ive heard anything like that before just the normal "ping ping" like in the movies

There is no 'scraping sound'
