Does anyone else remember the days when wargames were all about the good databases and mechanics and not about the graphics? |

I spent too many hours in college playing RSR when I should have been studying...
SeaQueen - can you expound upon this statement: "My first computer naval sim was Red Storm Rising. In all honesty, it's internals are more sophisticated than a lot of models the Navy uses today for simulation."? I've often wondered what was behind RSR in terms of tactics and database-type information. Do you know anyone who has managed to decompile the game? Or was an SDK released at some point?

I don't know anyone who's decompiled it. The thing is, it takes into account a lot of stuff that naval analysts still find difficult to wrap their brains around like countermeasures and decoys, evasion, etc. These things are notoriously difficult to deal with in a rigorous way so even a lot of models used by the navy for decision making don't take them into account or make sweeping assumptions about them.
