Hey...the guy served in the Navy during WW2 aboard a carrier and we're sure as hell not likely to be commissioning the USS Richard Milhous Nixon anytime soon. Besides...if they can name a sub after Jimmy Carter why not?

I also don't see why not. He's no worse than any other navy president - perhaps not more heroic or well-distinguished politically, but I think he did his service on both fronts.

I didn't agree with naming SSN-23 the Jimmy Carter either. In fact I would rather see Gerald Ford's name on a naval vessel than Jimmy Carter's. But I don't agree with naming the first in a whole new series of CVN for him. God rest his soul. But I'd rather name the new carrier the USS America.

Frankly, I'd like to go back to naming carriers after battlefields and former famous warships like Saratoga, Gettysburg, Enterprise, et al. Submarines should get their old apolitical fish names back too. It was Admiral Rickover who started us down this road with this famous editorial comment that "Fish don't vote." Phooey. Tradition should count for more.

However, if we do commission a Gerald R. Ford I think a band-aid insignia on the bow would be a nice touch.

I think a WIN button would be more appropriate.

Every time a name of a boat is announced we go through this idiocy....

He was a U.S President. The only guy we can be pretty sure they wont name a boat after is Nixon. Anyone else that served as U.S Prez, wil get a boat. It's simple. Get over it.

USS BILL CLINTON. I would be proud to serve on that boat... her support vessel could be USS MONICA LEWINSKY, and the sub of the TF could be USS HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON

IT'S OVER!

Navy To Name CVN78 The USS Gerald R. Ford!

Earlier today and with all the finesse that he showed managing the war in Iraq, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld while giving the eulogy at former President Ford’s funeral in Michigan let the cat out of the bag that CVN78 would be named the USS Gerald R. Ford.

USS America was one of the names being considered,
but the USS Gerald Ford won.

I also served in the US Navy, twice as long as Ford did. I
suffered through many battles to be the first to go on liberty
from San Diego to Vancover ...

I would like to tender my name for the next super carrier,
brand new class by the way, but I prefer to use my real name
(USS Geetrue doesn't sound quite right)

I propose the USS Raymond E. Armstrong CVN 78 ...

Doesn't that sound good?

Who would sink a ship with such a nice Irish name as that?
My words are bigger than your words.
