OT Ford gettin a carrier??
Sorry, but i think the Navy's decision to name the new carrier after this bloke is a joke. Not to mention the 'subtle' push in the media for it. Never won an election and was in for only 18 months or so, a caretaker and nothing more. Surely you guys have got a lot better people to be naming your frigging CARRIERS after!

Hey...the guy served in the Navy during WW2 aboard a carrier and we're sure as hell not likely to be commissioning the USS Richard Milhous Nixon anytime soon. Besides...if they can name a sub after Jimmy Carter why not?
|
I also don't see why not. He's no worse than any other navy president - perhaps not more heroic or well-distinguished politically, but I think he did his service on both fronts.

I think he would be one of the more worthy presidents to have a Carrier named after him. |
Frankly, I'd like to go back to naming carriers after battlefields and former famous warships like Saratoga, Gettysburg, Enterprise, et al. Submarines should get their old apolitical fish names back too. It was Admiral Rickover who started us down this road with this famous editorial comment that "Fish don't vote." Phooey. Tradition should count for more.
However, if we do commission a Gerald R. Ford I think a band-aid insignia on the bow would be a nice touch. ;) |

Yes, he was involved in the firefighting effort. So were hundreds of others. that story that ran the other day flouted how much of a hero he was, blah blah. sorry but did 1 man stop the carrier sinking? no. And if you're looking for more navy people who've done heroic things to name ships after, theres people who've done a lot more than he. And what gets me ESPECIALLY is this - its the lead ship of your new class of carrier! This type of carrier will likely be going for the majority of the century, if not the entire century, as a patriotic aussie im a yank-basher (:p ) but by god, name it something that evokes a sentiment of nationalistic pride! |

Every time a name of a boat is announced we go through this idiocy....
He was a U.S President. The only guy we can be pretty sure they wont name a boat after is Nixon. Anyone else that served as U.S Prez, wil get a boat. It's simple. Get over it. :smug: |
Even big bad bill??
|
USS BILL CLINTON. I would be proud to serve on that boat... her support vessel could be USS MONICA LEWINSKY, and the sub of the TF could be USS HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON

OT Ford gettin a carrier??
Quote:
The USS HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON should be the vast support vessel (AOE) and the USS MONIKA LEWINSKY should be the submarine (SSN). :D |
