Interesting tid bit...
The sub that was used to rep the USS Nerka (SS-380 which was a Balao class, that was authorized during World War II, but cancelled on 29 July 1944.) was the: USS Redfish (SS-395) which was used for most of the exterior shots, in the movie.  M. M.
