Seems a bit on the dry side for my suits, but, did you look here as well?

Default Manual Calculators

Hi Jason210

The stuff you have created sounds most interesting. If you can send me the plans and program you refer to at hmsironduke@ozemail.com.au I would be most grateful.

Cheers

Anybody who wants the plans for this can get them from me.

I've also made a 3D model of this, that runs as a small program (.exe). You just need to minimise the game and get it up, but you can make notes from it and be ready to fire the torpedo at a certain time and certain angle.
ME ME ME ME!

I would pretty much appreciate the program you've made so if you put it online then I'm sure to get it.

Thanks for the effort

Has anybody tried to make a Spears wheel?it was made to compute periscope look interval.
Can anyone clean the image up to make it readable?

Here's an example of how it all works: Submerged, daylight torpedo attack.

I've spotted a small convoy on my port bow, heading east. I adjust my course and/or speed to get into a collision course with the medium merchant (c2), so that it's bearing is constant:

My Course = 006° True...

The target ship's AOB appears to be about 30° starboard...
I then apply the information to my combination "whiz-wheel"...

My "whiz-wheel" consists of 3 layered wheels.
The Large wheel represents TRUE Compass.
The Middle wheel represents the Submarine.
The Small wheel represents the Target.

Now that I know the target's Bearing and AOB, they point to the target's TRUE Course of 095°.

I need to compute the target's speed to complete my firing solution, so I flip the whiz-wheel to the opposite side and use the circular slide rule.

After plugging the info into the vorhaltrectner/TDC, I slow the boat to 1 kn. and wait for the target to reach about 70° AOB before pulling the trigger.

I might add here, that I never worry about RANGE.
Something I learned in the ACADEMY is, if the target (see above) fills 1/3 of the viewfinder in x1.5...you are within 1000m. So, whenever you get a sight picture like that (NO MATTER THE WEATHER)...you are close enough to kill.

Hope this made sense.

cheers,

Default Spears Wheel

Hi Linton!

Had a look at the image but it doesn't become any clearer with any of the software I have.

I might be able to recreate one if I can get the detail of what is written on the device. Do you have those details? If you do send them to HMSIronDuke@ozemail.com..au and I will see what I can do.

Cheers

Thank you all very much for your willingness to share this information. In my opinion, implements like this significantly increase the immersion of the game.

In truth, I don't even have Silent Hunter III yet. It's on order from Amazon and because I received free shipping on the order (the missus bought some children's books), I'm going to have to wait a bit. The best things in life are worth waiting for, right?

I used to play Aces of the Deep many years ago on my old Pentium I 200Mhz. I've tried a couple of low-budget sub sims over the years, but was unimpressed. Nothing, at least in my opinion, compared to AotD. Everything I've read about SHIII, however, leads me to believe that my quest for a good sub sim may be over. I'm certainly excited about the prospect of manual targeting, thus my interest in this thread and subsequent registration on this forum.

Thanks again for posting this information!

David
