Old fashion method for determining SPEED
1. Get on a Collision course with the Target.
Constant bearing plus closing Range = Collision Course. Adjust your own course and/or speed. 2. Formula: Own Speed : Sin Target AoB : : Target Speed : Sin Target Bearing 3. If you have a sliderule hidden in the desk drawer, dust it off, this method is extreme fast. Here are two views, one is of a regular sliderule, and the second is a circular sliderule. The logrithmic characteristic and function of sliderules makes this an easy problem. (apologies for the bit of blurriness) http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/378...alog2zq.th.jpg http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/9625/vg2ud.th.jpg Here's the same thing with a sliderule that I made from heavy card stock and covered in clear plastic at Kinko's used with the original Silent Hunter. One side is sliderule the other is whiz-wheel. http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/8449/vg7kn0so.th.jpg http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/5805/cnbr2id.th.jpg Here's a pic of a rare WWII Uboat whiz-wheel http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/894/tdcwheel8tf.th.jpg |
Very nice! I love this stuff, this is the real fun of a subsim, getting into the head of the skipper and making the torpedoes intersect the ship, no arcade stuff. Thanks, I am off in the morning to buy a slide rule.

Wow IMPRESSIVE !
|
 Don! I feel so little now. I shall hang my captains hat, and turn to awayform my Boot. :shifty:
But this rules! |
I only hope who ever is creating SH4 is takeing notes of this thread.
I dont want to sail in the good Uboat lollypop again. :88) |
Similar device
I made a similar device out of a piece of card and a piece of acetate. Works great foir torpedo attacks. Be a nice addition in a WWI sub sim.

I've also made a 3D model of this, that runs as a small program (.exe). You just need to minimise the game and get it up, but you can make notes from it and be ready to fire the torpedo at a certain time and certain angle. |
if you guys like these calculators and whizwheels, then you probably
would really like these. these are not mine, they were made by a guy by the name of kim ronhof, and was made for silent hunter I these will probably be very good for sh4, when it comes out, if its the pacific theater. Kim Rønhof tools the first thing you need to do in order to see these whis wheels and tools is to download a free demo of DELTACAD. you can get it here: http://www.deltacad.com/demo.html download and install this program, then go to my rapidshare tactical folder and download the all six files from the kim's tools folder, then open the files with deltacad. the doc file shows you and instructs you on how to make the tools. i downloaded these a few years ago, and they are really nice. my tactical folder is here at rapidshare, http://rapidshare.de/users/7G4TQT/9 the password is silenthunter the tools are KimsTDCManualManualMk7.doc.htm Kims_COURCE_CALCULATOR_MARK_4B Kims_RANGE_CALCULATOR_MARK_3B Kims_MANUALTDC_1 RADAR_PLOTTER_MARK_8_BX |
Glad y'awl liked these items...
...I've always dreamed that the Devs of any subsim would include a "cut-out" whiz-wheel to go along with the package of maps 'n charts and "cheat" sheets. They're not hard to make. I have the pieces on files. Is it possible to upload them to Terrapin's sight? @jason210: check your PM. tnx. @greyrider: You said it, brother, Kim Ronhof, is the best! |

Good job  |
don
that slide rule is very nice, do you have that in your possession? can it be bought? i love tools of the trade! |
...greyrider...if you mean the laminated bamboo Hemmi versalog model...part of the legacy for the sons'. Both circular models are home-made, however.
Those interested in BUILDING one of their own, need to look here: http://www.sphere.bc.ca/test/build.html |
An idea for guru moders. Can anybody make a ruler as this in the same way than dragabble crono for TDC screen?
|
Great idea, coronas. Here's some virtual slide rules...maybe the modding guru's could find away to incorporate one of these babies...

Since so many have PM me for plans, I'll put them up on a website in the next week or so. I'll post the link here.
Thanks for the interest! |
don, the hemmi was what i was looking for,
people still sell em, but they re about 212 bucs, thats a lot of money. doing a internet search for info on SR'S, i came across this book at target departments stores. the name of the book is: Slide Rules and Submarines: American Scientists and Subsurface Warfare in World War II by montgomery c meigs http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html...sin=0898759056 i might order this book, im thinking about it. maybe subsim could order this book and have it available to us, so that they make some profit, and help with the finances of subsim.com what do you say neal? if you can get it , ill wait. |
