Old fashion method for determining SPEED
 
1. Get on a Collision course with the Target.
Constant bearing plus closing Range = Collision Course.
Adjust your own course and/or speed.

2. Formula: Own Speed : Sin Target AoB : : Target Speed : Sin Target Bearing
3. If you have a sliderule hidden in the desk drawer, dust it off, this method is extreme fast.

Here are two views, one is of a regular sliderule, and the second is a circular sliderule. The logrithmic characteristic and function of sliderules makes this an easy problem. (apologies for the bit of blurriness)

Here's the same thing with a sliderule that I made from heavy card stock and covered in clear plastic at Kinko's used with the original Silent Hunter.

One side is sliderule the other is whiz-wheel.

Very nice! I love this stuff, this is the real fun of a subsim, getting into the head of the skipper and making the torpedoes intersect the ship, no arcade stuff. Thanks, I am off in the morning to buy a slide rule.:up:

I made a similar device out of a piece of card and a piece of acetate. Works great foir torpedo attacks. Be a nice addition in a WWI sub sim.

Anybody who wants the plans for this can get them from me.

I've also made a 3D model of this, that runs as a small program (.exe). You just need to minimise the game and get it up, but you can make notes from it and be ready to fire the torpedo at a certain time and certain angle.

these will probably be very good for sh4, when it comes out, if its the pacific theater.

the first thing you need to do in order to see these whis wheels and tools is to download
a free demo of DELTACAD.
you can get it here:

download and install this program, then go to my rapidshare tactical folder and download
the all six files from the kim's tools folder, then open the files with deltacad.
the doc file shows you and instructs you on how to make the tools.
i downloaded these a few years ago, and they are really nice.

...I've always dreamed that the Devs of any subsim would include a "cut-out" whiz-wheel to go along with the package of maps 'n charts and "cheat" sheets.

They're not hard to make. I have the pieces on files. Is it possible to upload them to Terrapin's sight?

Eh, they can't even make a decent manual nowadays...but that would be great. Hopefully in SHIV they will give us more documentation/maps etc... and realise that not all gamers suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder.

...greyrider...if you mean the laminated bamboo Hemmi versalog model...part of the legacy for the sons'. Both circular models are home-made, however.

don, the hemmi was what i was looking for,

people still sell em, but they re about 212 bucs, thats a lot of money.

doing a internet search for info on SR'S, i came across this book at target departments stores.
