"They" may very well be out there, but "there" is a very big place of which we occupy a mere pindrop in both space and time (the history of our species to present).
I have seen a meteor burn up (presumably, it was fairly far off) in the sky though and it was a very spectacular sight even though it probably lasted all of a second or two.
