Sounds like they (the mods) aren't mixing correctly. Something is overwriting menu....txt, and maybe not updating dials or some other config file that has a reference to it.
The lock ups could be related to your drivers. Is the resolution that you're trying to configure your native monitor resolution? Are you using Nvidia or ATI? I'm wondering if a driver setting, like in Nvidia Control Panel may help.
