Its not just on escorts . Its a workaround . Better than no smoke screen at all . Someone would have to add smoke nodes to individual ship models if you want just escorts to have smoke screens IMO .

It can be done

Making DDs to deploy smoke screens when they get in alert status would be another cool feature.

Was there any particular strategy that they had to follow in this respect?

1. Yes that was a part of my comment. And that's what was done by DDs and DEs during the war..... Atlantic theater I assume, and the Pacific theater. Reference in link below.

2.Yes, it was to protect shipping before they could be torpedoed. I'm not sure how they went about setting up smoke screens or how often they were used. PT boats used smoke screens to hide behind when fleeing the enemy, and to lay mines. If implemented in a mod for SH5, I'd say to make it a random feature.... if it's at all possible.

From a search I did on Wikipedia:

Thank you for your clarifications, GT182.

By any chance, do you know from where smoke screens were coming out? Funnels, smoke shells, dedicated devices, or...

Gap, for DDs and DEs smoke came from the engine funnel I believe. Tho I understand thEY could have had smoke cans/generators too. PT boats had smoke cans/generators as their exhaust came out the back of the boat's muffled exhaust. No funnel like bigger ships had.

Sober and Volodya, I just ran the Dynamic Environment version and it works great. One thing extra that's a bonus I can see..... The flags no longer freeze up, they're still waving even when a ship heads for Davy Jone's locker. You guys did really good on this one.

Well V, maybe you didn't do it for the flags but you did do a good job on the compatability for Dynamic Environment.

I had Sober's original loaded but didn't get a chance to see what the problem was. And that's probably a good thing. LOL

A couple of good question:

is the smoke of this mod spotted by our watchcrew? And would it make visual detection of the single units concealed inside it, harder for the AI?

As far as I can see, no, the watch crew does not see this smoke screen at all.

Sober, unless you've done an update the smoke screen doesn't stop in my SH5. But like FiFi says, the fire effect does look a bit strange. Strange to me seeing it envelopes the complete ship all at once, instead of enveloping it gradually. One torpedo hit to the rear and the fore section is on fire at the same moment. I'd think that would happen only if a hit was in the center and the whole ship blew apart in one big explosion.
