I tried War Thunder, as a fan of IL-2 1946, Cliffs of Dover and hard-core flight sims like DCS A-10C and Black Shark, I can't honestly say I was that impressed.

I know that it is still being worked on but I feel that they are being a bit over-eager about saying that the "simulation" mode will be even mildly accurate.

Don't get me wrong, it is a fun game, I just think the sheer scope of the title will not allow anything close to the accuracy that many of the fans seem to think will be present.

Plus, I don't like the idea of a f2p flight sim with stats and a unlock system, it makes it feel like a xbox game to me.

Oh, I've played simulation mode on Birds of Steel multiplayer on Xbox 360.
Here's a transcript of the voice communication:
CYBERMAT47: Oh my God, I just killed an AI!
OTHER PLAYERS: Holy $&@€, dude, you must have developed this game! We're only 43 minutes in and you've already got a kill! And you've only gone into a spin and blacked out 53 times!

Difficulty (or good gameplay as the case may be) doesn't necessarily mean realism Besides, 43 minutes isn't much compared to the learning curve of weeks that a lot of complex sims have, and that's just for learning systems.

That said, I can't imagine an MMO that's full-blown in terms of complexity, so this is probably a great engine and a great approach for creating a reasonably popular, populated game with lots of people to play against.

OK, so I was exaggerating.
But still, Gaijin have proved themselves to be quite good at finding that balance between playability and realism, especially for Xbox and PS players!

Yep, they're a good team. I never really got into WoP very much, but I love how well-optimized their engine is. Looks great, runs far smoother than anything in the original IL-2 series ever did. Pretty stable online too. So I've got no doubts that this will run smooth and look good, gotta see what they do with the gameplay for the ships I guess.

After playing for 3 days i can say, this game is solid. Ok it's not a simulator but as far as game immersion, good fights and plenty of opponents goes this game has it all.

I had some lag yesterday on 2 occasions, but overall the game runs smooth and the flying is fun and entertaining, and i love that because i've flown sims for a very very long time and never tried anything like this. As said the arcade mode is fun, it's like a flying circus, an arena of just about any aircraft, really nice!

Beta version has no ship control available yet, but i guess this will be possible once the game goes in the next phase of development, the open Beta..

You should get Birds of Steel.
It's pretty much an offline version (but has an online multiplayer option), and it has a bucketload of campaigns. About 9, 11 with the Battle of Britain expansion.
