they only vanish, when you first give an order to the watch officer on the bridge, after a surfacing, -while- you look at the helmsmen.


If you climb up, to realisticly talk to the watch officer, and enjoy some sea air, then they arent vanish, they pack their things, leave the station, and take a loong brake at their bunks.

The only time I give a watch officer order, is when im calculating target speed on the navigational map during a surface attack, and lazily request the target's distance from him. And in that time, the helmsmen is at my back, so they can leave without vanishing XD
(maybe I can yell the order loud enough from there, so it sounds across the conning tower, and they hear it on the bridge,
in fact it only half a meter from the hatch where they usually yell up: "One soul, to the bridge?" or someone copy the order, as they usually yell around Kaleun orders to eachother anyway
)
