And aren't very good choices for forward blue water deployment. They are relatively silent, but are also slow, limited in range and of shallower diving depth than nukes. As in all things, there are tradeoffs. A Type 212 is not a boat that you would send to patrol the Gulf of Mexico.

So you find a Russian sub in the gulf, big deal. I came to Bodø on saturday and saw the destroyer Admiral Chabanonko docked in the harbor. There was Russian sailors everywhere. I last saw the Chabanenko here in Bodø in may docked alongside KNM Fridtjof Nansen.
