Its not "classified". Its simply restricted from being diseminated through the US military chain of supply.

Nothing stops a servicemember in the US from going out and buying one. Nothing stops them from then burning what is then their personal property, provided they do not violate any local/state/federal burning laws.....

This memorandum only applies to those in theatre where the good light bird Albertson has such authority over Chaplains and religious documentation command.

Just saying.....

Yes, that is clear, but don't you think that it puts any non-Muslim member of the forces, who wants to have a copy of the quran, under the general suspicion that they only want to get it to do harm to the book and thus to the image of the US?
An atheist can get a copy of the bible, a buddhist can have a Torah, without permission of his CO.
I don't know to waht extent freedom of religion can be legally restricted in the military, but to me it looks like a double standard. Freedom of religion means also the freedom to read sciptures from "the other side".

Storing in a secure location is not even close to classifying.

I think you are just trying to stir stuff up here.

There is nothing in that letter that would lead anyone to believe that it involves classification.

TLAM, I read it the same way as Platapus did - intentionally inaccurate. I see (now) that you were exaggerating to make a point, and thats perfectly legitimate. Its all good, don't sweat it!

2 questions.

1) why is the dod handing out religious material to start with?

2) if so, why aren't all such texts, etc under the same rules?

Yup. Translate it from military jargon to simple language, all that letter really says is, "We can't have you bozo's riling up the local's, so If you want a Koran, see the base chaplain".

In another forum former Navy officer cursed U.S. military's handling of this incident. Reason was that by burning those books military missed an propaganda opportunity. When Taliban's started using Quran as messaging tool they itself desecrated the Holy Book. Not so serious offence as burning it improperly but still worthy for propaganda spin.

P.S. Quran can be disposed by burning as long as remains are collected and respectfully buried to ground.

I am sure that the media outlets in the rest of the world are as reliable as the one in the US and that some people in other nations are as susceptible to misinformation as Americans are.

The ones that went off more than likely heard a blown out of proportion story and believed it.I mean just listen to what you can hear people say in passing conversations about any given world event it is amazing how it becomes a game of "telephone" (that game where someone says something in one persons ear it then goes from person to the next around the room it it never ends in the same wording as it started).

The rioters probably heard some story about the American military having trained monkeys who went around grabbing Qurans crapping on their pages and then setting them alight with Zippo lighters. In the story they heard the Taliban PWs where writing poems about walking in fields picking daisies and planting IEBs Improvised Emotional Bouquets.
