Thanks for the comments everyone.
I appreciate Nelson may not be the main flagship of the RN but he was still a major threat to our UBoat operations.
Sinking a battleship of ANY class is a great achievement, especially for an iron coffin with hardly any armour value whatsoever
The real special thing about this engagement was that it was done in a 'textbook' fashion and it worked perfectly,I used every advantage to my,well, advantage,I entered the convoy from the rear at night, dropped my draught lower in the water to mask my profile better against the choppy water, matched speed to their speed, slowly pulled up alongside Nelson from 400-500m,fired 4 (impact tips set to approx 5m) straight into his portside from approx 260 AOB,immdeiately dived below the convoy and swung out behind them, was not detected once either on the surface or submerged and repeated the process for a second attack on Nelson firing a 5th into him destroying him.Worked like a charm.
So for anyone having problems engaging convoys I readily advise this tactic,at least until allied radar becomes a problem,in which case this tactic would be certain suicide. When radar is against you it would probably be better getting well ahead of the convoy by a few hours and attacking submerged from a stationary position when it arrives.

To be fair mate its probably the safest way to attack submerged as you wont be making any noise (make sure you are on silent operations just prior to attacking just to be extra safe),as attacking on the surface with radar flying all over the place is suicide.Although...if you were very quick and very alert you may survive up there, you could shield yourself from the escorts by placing yourself near to the convoy ships and blasting them with your DG and pulling out after causing damage, then return when they have calmed down again and see if that works,I mean would they risk opening fire so close to their own ships?.You could consider this 'Naval Guerilla Tactics'

Never tried that i wonder if the escorts would lob rounds close to you by the escorts, i would assume in real life no, but in sh3 i would say yea, anyone can confirm this?

I think attacks like these really did happen but were probably very rare. The convoy would need to be weakly defended and you would need an excellent hardened crew to pull tactics like these off,not to mention the level of situational awareness and skill on your (the commander's) part. But under the cover of darkness and with the element of surprise I wouldnt be surprised if it did work with some measure of success.

Try surfacing then firing a few shells at an escort....now quickly position yourself so there is a merchant between you and the escort and you'll see that the escort fires at you but because there is a merchant in the way, she takes the damage.

Not very realistic...stupid AI.

Noticed this when first played for some reason I could not dive due to depth charge damage and there was a large merchant between U-123 and the attacking destroyer.
