When the Nortridge Quake hit in 1994 (6.7 manitude), I was working in an office and one of our interns was from Wisconsin and had never felt an earthquake before. However, she managed to sleep right through it and came in to the office highly disappointed to have missed the quake. BTW, each full level on the Richter scale is 10 times the strength of the previous leve, e.g, a 3.0 is ten time stronger than a 2.0, etc. So you people back east may think you felt a big one, but the Northridge Quake was roughly 10 time bigger than today's quake.
Incidentaly, it was nice to see something finally moving Congress.l.. ![]() |

5.8 is not that strong probably.
In strong earthquake people would find it terrifying even just standing up as the ground moves into every direction as if an invisible giant playing with it. Standing up would be scary and requires a struggle somewhat but especially strong nerves, running however would be IMPOSSIBLE without falling all over. In strong earthquake most people would kneel down with hands holding the ground out of fear and to get a sense of bearing/balance. Most people would think that earthquake causes mere tremors but they couldn't be more wrong as in truth the ground would literally move all over the place. if it was just tremor, mild shaking or swinging that would mean the earthquake is not that strong or not that near or not that shallow but if the ground literally moves all over, start praying and get out as fast and as best as you can if possible.

1. would anybody care? ![]() 2. should we even bother rebuilding? (rebuild the Smithsonean)

What would happen if Washington, D.C. were swallowed up whole by the earth? "Aside from the improvement..." Last edited by vienna; 08-23-11 at 07:28 PM. |

Too bad it happened during holidays(I assume the house reps are taking their break term). If not if 'the house' were to cave in, the Republicans would be most at loss. If not at worst the politicians would be snapped out of their doldrums and childish behavior.

Posted in the Capitol thread, but I figured I'd add here that I felt nothing today. I feel left out.
