This was no race riot. The riot in Tottenham has destroyed 26 years' of work in building trust between the police and the community, says David Lammy, the MP for Tottenham, in the Times. He was there in 1985, when young black men rioted on the Broadwater Farm estate over the death of a woman during a police raid.
"The 1985 riots were race riots: black youth fighting the police. The weekend's violence was not a race riot, it was an attack on the whole of the Tottenham community, organised on Twitter. That's why so many of the people arrested weren't from Tottenham. The grief of one family must never be hijacked to inflict grief on others."

There are many many dozens of industrial disputes in Britain that have been very violent with quite a bit of rioting and burning and looting, but that isn't one of them.

To me it looks like the burning of buildings are on a much bigger scale than in previous riots, maybe I have this perception just because we live in the video age and a burning building is always an eye-catcher. However there seem to awful lot apartment buildings (flats) which are set on fire.

Looks like a good article, BM, will read it all when I'm at work . I've read in another article that you cannot compare Tottenham '85 with todays Tottenham, as much money went into this quarter. What do you think about that? Did something change there or are the situations comparable? Not talking about the budget cuts of your current government, they look similar to Maggie's.



Note to all you British: Us non-Limeys are extremely thankful if you post some good news sources. As you already stated: the usual suspects we are used to read to get informed about Britain (BBC, guardian, etc.), don't do a great job atm...
