There actually should not be much water pressure along the axis of the periscope - most of it would be trying to compress the scope inwards towards its axis.

But the word around here is:

1) You would historically be limited to speeds under like 5 knots or it could break off/bend your periscope.

2) You could not see far underwater through the periscope.

3) The seals, while fine when operating statically at depth, would probably not tolerate operating dynamically, that is, with the periscope moving up and down and twisting, at very much depth.

The current SH3 fix by h.sie and stiebler makes the periscopes worthless above about 5 knots; you also can't raise it either.
A bit of realism that was really needed.

I've heard about this h.sie fix... i think I'll google it for my next career. Changing the rules mid-patrol feels... wrong somehow :P

H.sie and Stiebler have done some great work with the promise of even more to come.

Well worth it. The periscope fix that h.sie came up with is perfect. Your periscope blurs if you go a little too fast and is unusable if you are going too fast. No more running around at flank speed while submerged and looking through your scope.

There are other fixes as well like no more kicking the WO out of bed when you surface. Now he gets his butt out of bed himself and goes up to the bridge automatically.
