Yes and no, much depends on mods, weather, crew ratings and what you're doing. DD's can only do one of two things, listen or use sonar, they can't do both, but have several on you, once can listen why others hunt with sonar.

I've set most of my escorts to elite. Very dangerous in a group. Almost always one DD is listening with his bow pointed right at me, when another makes a run, the listening DD will make a run.

The good news for you is the listening DD doesn't have a good fix on you, meaning you're doing something right...deep, silent running, maybe rough water, but probably a lower rated escort, some are quite dumb.

I got caught in calm water, you can see one escort listening pointed right at me, why two escorts make runs. Enemy crew ratings make a big difference on how they attack, higher ratings, vet and elite they can be quite a chore to deal with. Elite escorts seem to work very well in attacking together, why lower rated escorts almost always attack one at a time making passes from the stern.

The mod effect is great.
