All I have to say, is WOW.. I am in utter shock!! I am just playing around with GWX and I cannot believe what I have been missing.. All this time trying over and over to enjoy my 50 dollar SH5 and it was never going to happen..
Graphics mean nothing if the game play is not there. So glad to be back ![]() That being said. One thing I LOVE about SH3 and GWX is the fact there is upgrades.. I just love it.. What is the best place to start, I just did a test run career and it started me on the VIIB, and that was 1939. Is there a port I can start with the most basic sub and eventually work up to the IX boats? Thanks all! |

I think the choice of boats at any given time depends on what flotilla you're in. I don't know how that pans out in GWX by itself, I've always started careers with SH3 Commander.
Which, if you're going to play SH3, you should get anyway. When you start a new career from Commander you can choose your start month/year, choose your flotilla (which will determine your home base), and then see which boats are available in that flotilla at that time. Find one that will let you start in a Type II and you're good to go. I use the "historical availability" option so I assume I'm limited to whichever boats each flotilla actually had on a particular date - but if you don't use that, it's possible that you can pick any flotilla/base and then have your pick of u-boat types to choose from. Sticky thread on Commander here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=147237 For a lot of folks it's a must have, it will add so many options to managing your crew and career - can't imagine playing without it at this point! |

NYGM is another "super mod" like GWX. You can't use them both on the same game install.
Whether or not it's better than GWX is a purely subjective matter - I haven't played it yet, so I can't say in what ways it's different. There's probably a sticky thread on it in the Mods Workshop forum where you can find information about it and ask people who use it what they like about it and why. SH3 Commander is a stand-alone program that you use to 1) start and manage a career, a crew, and the accompanying patrol logs 2)activate/deactivate various gameplay options that are not otherwise available (or that Commander makes simpler to use) 3) launch your preferred install of the game once you've done those things to your satisfaction in the Commander interface Some of the things you can do in Commander: - adjust water clarity, wave height, time compression defaults, gun reload times, days in base between patrols, and add real ship names and cargo info to your patrol logs - promote, dismiss, and award qualifications and decorations to crewmen with far more flexibility than the game interface allows - choose from a variety of "fatigue models" for your crew, including "no fatigue," which eliminates the need to hold their hands and lead them gently to their bunks every time a shift ends so they don't get all tuckered out - select/deselect options that will make your SH3 experience more or less historically accurate depending on preference - launch the game in either single mission or career mode with all your preferred options added to the game If you're like me, you can even print out a copy of your personnel file and crew list after each patrol, and spend a good bit of time going over them deciding who gets a promotion or a medal, so you've got administrative "paperwork" to do when you get back to base... just like a real kaleun. ![]() |

I use GWX with Commander, so I will kinda go over what it does...
You Launch Commander (If in Vista, make sure as a admin) and you create a new career, you pick your start date and location, you can pick SH3 standard crew, or a random crew, and launch it (SH3) from Commander, it will launch SH3 and you play your mission normally. When you get back to port, it is where commander really shines. You from commander can see the name, tonnage, and crew (and crew lost) of your sinkings, it creates a GREAT looking log book in HTML, a photo of your commander, and also can do things like set the time between patrols (I set mine to 20 days, you can set it to whatever, including random Number of days) You also can customize your experince with random failures, crew transfers/losses betwen patrols (simulating the navy transfering in and out men, and the random car crash/AWOL/killed by partisans). Basicly, it adds the immersion factor by 10x. A lot of people play (and love) Commander with GWX, I do. Do not forget the GWX SH3 Commander compatibility files that are needed by SH3 Commander to operate properly if you run GWX.

In my humble opinion, SH3+GWX+mods/cmdr aint goin away anytime soon.
I don't think it is even fair to try to compare SH5 and SH3+ Yeah they both have Uboats, but they are truly different games. Maybe I need to dust off my SH5 and give it a good try...again.

Not needed if you install both SH3Commander and SH3 (the game) outside of the default Program Files location.

SH3 is going to be like 1st edition AD&D, until they go back to original and fix the problems people are going to keep playing (in larger numbers that despite their age continue to grow) them as they're overall the best editions of the games. |

look for the *pre plotted coarse* option select Keil outbound and click *follow plotted coarse* the coarse should appear to the Brunsbuttal locks pays to check where the auto nav plot goes just to make sure the coarse is in the channel returning to Keil theres a dot on the map its named keil canel in or something (jeeze looked at it a 1000 times couldnt tell ya lol) plot coarse to that *exact* point then same deal as above except its *plot coarse inbound* dont forget to click *follow plotted coarse* watch out those lock gates if ya running the w-haven v6 mod

I should ask, while the canal is being talked about... Is there any way to get through there quickly? I've used the autonav route in the past, and it works, but for whatever reason (close to shore or shallows?) I can rarely engage much in the way of time compression and the trip takes 30+minutes of real time. As such, I much prefer taking the long way around, because for me it is a lesser investment of time.
