This is a great game on many levels for whatever floats your boat. Yes there are boring parts that make you want to quit sometimes and I almost did until I was found by a small but active corp. You must find a corp. Corporations add a whole new level to gameplay from trading to PvP. I have been playing for over 6 months with my corp and have not gottten bored as my corp is great and is always willing to help me, taking me from a small destroyer to a my own Battleship, whether it is money, and extra gun, or helping me fit my ship (which makes me really confused). I have played other MMO's and the player base in EVE is MUCH more serious then other games.

I stopped playing Eve when I found I was reading a book in between waiting for something to happen. Someone reviewed it by saying 'Eve does the impossible: It makes space boring'. The one really good thing about Eve is the economy, where everything in game is made by the players. This also means that it's more difficult to get started in a small business, as you are less efficient and can't create new products, but it's the least broken economy out there.
