There are millions of players and WoW brings in some serious income for Blizzard so it makes perfect sense to get as much as possible out of the game.

A game like Diablo needs a lot of development time because there is just so much that needs to be added. All the enemies and of course the items. They need to make 3D models now for all the different armour and weapons going onto a player and then theres all the gems, custom gear, sets and uniquie items, monsters

Diablo 2 was a massive game in terms of how much stuff there was in game. Think about just how many weapons, armour, locations and monsters there were in diablo 2 and you get some idea of how long its going to take to bring diablo into a new 3D engine.

They also need to work on the new and old characters that are coming into the game (heres hoping the necromancer and paladin are back in)
But I wants it.

They'll have plenty of time to milk WoW some more after Diablo.

Ditto.

They talk about their "endless iteration" stuff but I've played a lot of Blizzard games (except WoW of course) and they're not perfect. Diablo II had serious balance issues when it was released. If there's any truth to their "endless iteration" claims then D3 had better be absolutely bloody perfect.

Yay I got to save my money on other great titles such as SHV and The Old republic and Napoleon TW and still have money to pick a couple boardgames

I would already be quite happy if they manage to release it this time with a proper net code.

Can't say I'm surprised. I didn't expect it any time soon. In fact, I thought it wasn't going to be until 2012.

Hopefully they will use this time to change the art direction and make it look like a Diablo game and not a Warcraft game.

I hate when devs announce games so far from release.

I agree with HunterIXC among others; Blizzard wants to milk WoW (I admit I hate it; for me, it ruined the Warcraft setting) until it's totally dry. Yes, SC2 is on the way -Betas have been released not much ago- and looks good, but it seems their main source of profit is WoW and everything related to it; from RPGs to that movie that's also on the way, including all the in-game stuff that you've to pay for.
Anyway, it seems WoW's end is looming on the horizon (however, it certainly will not happen tomorrow), despite they said they expected it would last still more years and their plans of releasing new expansions if people still plays it; see, for example, how the world will be redone in Cataclysm (and new race combinations (night elven wizards, when according to some sources they could not handle arcane magic? )).
I suspect they're taking positions to be ready for WoW's -slow- downfall, releasing SC2, and after it DiabloIII and finally that new MMO it's rumored they're making.
