I decided to test it once, I'd snuck in quietly close to some escorts without being noticed, made sure they didn't know I was sat there and tried pinging a few times to see if they'd hear. They just carried on sailing on without hearing a thing. Well till I let off a few eels any way!

The escorts can not hear you pinging....which is a pity I suppose, but there you are, we work with what we've got. Similar to asdic/sonar being able to detect things through the other side of land masses

Arrrggghhh!!!! My fault I suppose for not asking the question earlier (or, perhaps missing the comment previously on the forum). How I'd wished to know how far I could push the boat before running aground and not dared to ping the bottom for fear of waving the "here I am!!" flag..

But thanks.. that is indeed very good to know.

EDIT... along the same lines I suppose, but it makes sense to ask the question here: Radio reports to KM HQ (even late war)...do they give away your position/draw in the hunters?

Yes, sending a radio transmisson increases the chance of detection, or at least of aircraft showing up in your vicinity.
