I've always found RTW to be more fun than MTW2. I think it's because of the wider variety in the factions. If you start as one of the main European factions in MTW2, you're basically fighting against armies that are the same as yours for most of the game. That's why I liked playing as the Poles, the Byzantines, and the Turks - they had a bit more variety in terms of their own units and who they fought.

In RTW, you may get two or three factions that are similar, but that's it. Most of the factions have an extra something that makes them special and unique to fight. For example, in my current RTW game (RTR mod), I'm fighting against barbarian Gauls in the north, Numidian horses in Africa, and Macedonian phalanxes in Greece.
