Funny how an increase in oil prices affects the US a hell of a lot more than some other countries.

Its one of the main sources of revenue... taxes make up a large percentage of the 'cost' of a galon of gas. As the base price goes down so does the revenue stream.

So if the base price goes down, increase the tariffs to get that revenue stream flowing again.

Not 100% sure on this, but I think folks here have to commute much farther distances to get to work, which affects them substantially when gas prices double. Also we do not decent mass transit.

That's why in the UK if the govt. wanted to we can mitigate oil price rises affecting petrol, but of course what govt. ever likes to lower taxes?
