Did that and sunk a crap load of stuff including about 30,000 tons of cargo vessels. Im out of torps and can not get a mission complete. Any advise would be of great help. Thanks in advance.

You have to patrol within 50NM of the star for 48 game hours. When I'm out of torpedoes, I just park on the star and sit on time compression until the 48 hours is up. The map won't update by itself, you need to zoom or change to a different view momentarily to get the star grayed out.
