Default Good patrol last night (and a couple questions)

Sorry didnt take any screenshots (I will next time though), but just wanted to pass word on a successful patrol. I tried sneaking into an enemy port and had a lot of success. I had to evade a few destroyers on patrol in the area but once I got in there it was several ships sitting motionless, easy targets! Got a troop carrier, medium tanker, and a couple destroyers just sitting at dock. I noticed that when I started the attack there were destroyers closing from long range, but I was long gone before they got there. Lots of fun!

Anyway I had a quick question. I noticed that when a destroyer spots you they head your way at full speed. During their path to you they zigzag (to avoid torpedoes) but when they get to within about 400 meters they make a straight line toward you. I thought it would be a good strategy to fire torpedos right at that moment. Sure enough the torpedos always connect head on, however they never detonate. If real life memory serves me correctly, torpedoes dont arm themselves until a certain distance so that the explosion doesnt destroy the sub. Is that what is going on in this case? If so, is there a way to take off that precautionary measure? I think I'd be willing to take my chances on the torpedo exploding too close if it means getting an angry destroyer off my back. Thanks guys, and happy hunting.
