Convoy Approach Periscope Down
One thing I have learned in GWX: In daytime and calm seas, even crummy tramp steamers will spot your periscope from a great distance. In my last convoy, I had 3 choices: Attack in daylight with 180 meters of water or at night with around 60 meters. I could also skip trying to commit suicide.
I chose daylight and deeper water. The moment the lead escort came into sight and I had him identified on the hydrophone, down went the scope. I would not use it again until positioned for the attack. In the picture below, you will see how I ploted the escort's track without risking to give away my position. The screenshot was taken after the attack with a destroyer about to drop depth charges on top of me. I am sure that had I used the scope before I was in position to attack, the destroyers would have nailed me. A few minutes later, one of the torpedoed ships exploded. A pyro ship exploded, too but I had nothing to do with that one. Another thing I've noticed is at 3 kts, the destroyers have at least a vague idea of where you are. At 2 kts, they lose you. Got 15,000 tons from this baby. ![]() ![]()
