I had a really cool mission last night running with GW in 1940 in the worst storm I ever saw. I was trying to track a large slow convoy, most of the time the conning tower was under waves, someone from below yelled out that we might have been detected, I couldn’t see a blasted thing except for waves and rain. Then to my portside out of the soup came an oversized tanker, I never did see the whole ship at one time the weather was bad. I at once give orders to turn to set up on the ship’s starboard side, he must have seen me because he began to drift off back into the thickness with a hard turn. I came about more but ended up on his stern, I figure I could at least take out his screws. All of a sudden I hear cannon shots, I turn to see if that Bernard was about, but right on my rear was a destroyer bearing down hard, again it was cool seeing him just kind of seep through the weather into my view. I must have been right in the middle of the convoy because I kept seeing parts of ships appear and disappear as I tried to avoid the escorts, but I couldn’t lose them so I had to dive without even letting a fish go. This convoy was protected by the weather because every time I could get close enogh to fire a torpedo one of their escorts would find me and drive me down.
