cool weather

I had a really cool mission last night running with GW in 1940 in the worst storm I ever saw. I was trying to track a large slow convoy, most of the time the conning tower was under waves, someone from below yelled out that we might have been detected, I couldn’t see a blasted thing except for waves and rain. Then to my portside out of the soup came an oversized tanker, I never did see the whole ship at one time the weather was bad. I at once give orders to turn to set up on the ship’s starboard side, he must have seen me because he began to drift off back into the thickness with a hard turn. I came about more but ended up on his stern, I figure I could at least take out his screws. All of a sudden I hear cannon shots, I turn to see if that Bernard was about, but right on my rear was a destroyer bearing down hard, again it was cool seeing him just kind of seep through the weather into my view. I must have been right in the middle of the convoy because I kept seeing parts of ships appear and disappear as I tried to avoid the escorts, but I couldn’t lose them so I had to dive without even letting a fish go. This convoy was protected by the weather because every time I could get close enogh to fire a torpedo one of their escorts would find me and drive me down.

Sometimes I think the escort are too good! The fog in the game is awesome. I had a liberty ship come out of the fog. I was a 90 degree shot and I let her have it. I was cool watching it materialize out of the fog like that. I was getting closing submerged using the hydrophones. I surfaced as I had know she was close. Sure enough, out of the mist about 600m away from me. Probably the coolest hunt I have had.

Scorts seems to have x-ray eyes or jedi knights in the bridge. After a first attack in the fog, every time that i run in the surface appears a destroyer, and it was in 1941.

Radar? Check the AI crew skill levels. If they are ELITE in 41 they will find you in the fog.

Learn to shot Torps with the sonar. You will miss a lot but it is better than nothing. Bad weather is a great cover to hide your noise from the escorts. I still use Auto TDC but in real bad weather with a visiablity of only 200 meters, you will need to do shoot and pray shots using the sonor.

Jedi knights!!! Thank God only normal destroyers appear, not IMPERIAL STAR DESTROYERS under command of Admiral Vader!
