Maybe somebody here knows for sure, but I do not think this occurs or is modeled in the game - I've sat submerged next to a stationary/sinking merchant for several hours (game time) waiting to see if it would sink, and neither of us appears to have moved at all - I suppose this could mean that we're both drifting at exactly the same speed, but it seems hard to believe that would be the case given that it's (mostly) up on top (where it would presumably be affected by winds etc.) and I'm completely down below.
