The ship's captain is interested in navigating. He knows his previous positions, speed and his present course; he really only needs limited supplementary info for safe navigation. The RMS Lusitania was was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat on 7 May 1915. This event caused the deaths of 1,198 passengers and crew. The quotation above was made by the captain to explain why he was not at fault for the sinking of his vessel.

So no, the captain is not only interested in navigating. He is interested in not getting torpedoed.
