As soon as oil is being sold anywhere in the world for anything else than the Dollar currency, the US monopoly would be over - Iran had threatened to sell oil for Euro currency back then, and this was when the inexplicable hit the fan.
Iran does not really pose a direct threat to the US, but for its interests in the region. I fear Captain Obvious is coming ..
