There might be a conflict with whatever mods you might be running.
Have you tried the game totally clean and stock and still have this problem? I run on Win XP and have no issues and can save with a convoy and escorts on top of me and start right up where I left off, no issues and no CTD. I play with VERY limited mods to avoid any conflicts. I am sorry to see these crappy problems inflicted on fellow gamers.
