perhaps its the fact that Jackson is so controversial and Farrah Fawcett was not?

I think it's because there are a tiny number of individuals in any generation who are here to influence and inspire others, and who seem destined to die young having completed their task. John Lennon was one. Elvis was another. Michael Jackson is in that mould.

Whether you loved him or loathed him, he was an inspirational character to millions of people accross the world.
