Anyone having problems with some campaigns, especially 1943 based campaigns causing the sound.act file to CTD the game?
Sorry if this is already discussed about. Just frustrated with the year 1943 and these CTD's based on this file. BTW this happens with and without TC either in nav map or any other screen without changing screens. I have ROW sound effect v9 installed. Again only in campaigns started in 1943 or ones started in 1942 that entered into 1943 and within 100nm of my last sinking event. Tested this and no matter what direction I go in, when I exceed 100nm's from my last sinking I will CTD no matter what.

Remove the sound mod and see if it continues. Are you running any radio mods?

Only sound mod is ROW v9, but it was doing this before ROW v9 ( clean install up to v1.4 ) and only in the year 1943 no other year. Its not mod related in any way. Which is why I did not post this in the mods forum originally. Was just wanting to play around in 1943, but I never have been able to since I got this game. Runs fine in 1941, 42, 44 and 45. But never in it original release, v1.2, 1.3 or 1.4 for 1943 and I have it in a dual clean install for the add-on 1.5 and it does it there as well, in the same year for the US Subs.

I'm having an issue with the sound.act file... and it's happening to effect my 1943 campaign as well.
I too, have tried a clean install up to 1.4 without any sound mods. It seams that shortly after my first patrol sinking it decides to CTD. No other campaign year is affected by it, just 1943. Very strange. -AO1

Radio mods with events that point to non-existent (or misnamed) media files will cause CTDs (even if you are not listening to the station with the event or even listening to the radio). The CTD will always happen at the same time/date (which is why we are asking the question since it seems to be happening around the same time period). |

Hopefully, I think I solved the sound.act error which causes CTD's! I started a career 12/1941 and had no problems until 7/1943. After reading some posts here about sound files, stereo vs. mono and file extension missing and other theories; I used my JSGME to remove a radio add-on and the one I removed (sorry to say) was "Captain Midnight's" radio mod (CBS News). Reloaded the game and no more CTD sound.act error!
My SH4 is running under the 1.4v upgrade. So maybe there is a glitch in the July 1943 radio file(s). Hope this helps any squids out there with the same problem. Last edited by meerkatt; 03-15-09 at 11:38 PM. |

Do you happen to have an exact date for that?

All I know is that is started in July 1943 when I left Pearl and headed toward Truk. Wait a second; now I remember it started July 19th, 1943 or after. When I viewed the radio files, I believe in the CBS ones there where only two to three July 1943 radio files. Because I remember turning on the radio on that date and no CTD's until a couple days later of traveling.

Is there any way to ammend Midnight's original post and link it to this fix? The bug has been around since before the dodo went extinct ... and it's probably to blame for more game crashes than any other. Granted, it's a nice mod. But in its current state, it's a real gotcha!

You could also use Digital Truckers tool.
Radio Station Manager. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=120510 That looks way kewl and probably could have found it faster than I did manually. I do find it strange tho that no one bothered to fix it and post it up before this.

Well, I was having this problem today and I was getting frustrated...until I found this thread. I too love the "Captain Midnight's" radio mod (CBS News) and now I am happy again, thanks to this fix! Thanks guys!
