Easy mate, it's an old joke between friends, goes back to the good old days of SCXII and SCU. Well, strictly speaking, a submarine starts ageing as soon as it leaves the shipyard, much like a new born baby will age until it eventually dies some 80 years later.

The real situation/issue is technology overtaking it (the sub) and not it's actual physical age.
Just look at some of the boats that have been preserved from WWII and earlier
