Early war, S boat. Just a fun, almost Type 2 like boat (though really closer to a type 7 minus the rear torpedo. I like the older style hull with the vertical bow, and fish like fins. The S-24 later on has a neat looking yet ugly tower. But this boat simply cannot keep up with faster convoys.

Mid war? Any of the early fleet boats really. They really look the same, aside from the sargo with the muffler bumps.

Late war, Gato, or Balao. They just look and operate awesome. The Balao great for hitting a convoy and diving deep under the layer.

voted Tambor, I actually prefer Gar

Fast enough, deadly enough. Why bother waiting for the Balao?

I'm a Tambor fan myself. I guess it has something to do with the beginning stages of combat patrols against Japan, the excitement that comes with finding your way against a new enemy. The early fleet boats were so untested in combat, that there were so many 'discoveries' being made on war patrol's. It all makes for some gripping encounters and good stories.

Tambor class for me also, especially the USS Tambor SS-198. She was my first command many years ago when I first joined the PTC.

I've always had a soft spot for S-39 (SS-144) but I voted GATO class. Right now I'm commanding USS SCAMP (SS-277)

Happy Hunting & Merry Christmas!

S-42 Class. Current carreer in the S-46, SS-157. link@ http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/08157.htm
It seems I eat less depth charges In S boats then the larger fleet boats in both Silent Service 2 and SH4. Less detectable to active or passive acoustic sensors? CL

Loving the Balao I've got right now, but my best SH IV moments seem to mostly be with the Sargo class. Was planning on taking one for my next career when I finally try manual targetting.

Originally I said S-Class. Of late, however, I've been stacking the deck with the most capable sub at my disposal for that fun, a-historical feel.
